Foreign Minister Iruthisham Adam Pushes for Global Investment and Climate Resilience
World ·
Foreign Minister Iruthisham Adam has reaffirmed the Maldives' commitment to expanding its international engagement, positioning the nation as a strategic hub for global investment and a leader in climate advocacy. Speaking at the opening ceremony of the Small Island Developing States (SIDS) Global Business Network Forum 2026 and the Island Investment Forum, Minister Iruthisham emphasized that strengthening global ties is a cornerstone of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s administration.
The Minister highlighted that for small island nations, international cooperation is not merely beneficial but essential for survival and growth. She underscored the Maldives' ongoing role in advocating for the unique challenges faced by SIDS, particularly the existential threat of sea-level rise. By leveraging international platforms, the government aims to ensure the Maldivian voice remains influential in global discussions on climate resilience.
Addressing the economic landscape, Minister Iruthisham shifted the narrative away from the perceived vulnerabilities of small economies. She asserted that SIDS should be viewed as lucrative investment opportunities rather than liabilities. To achieve this, the Maldives is prioritizing the digitalization of its economy and the transition toward sustainable, green energy to build a more resilient future.
"Our hopes for the Maldives are tied to a successful future," Minister Iruthisham stated, noting that such goals cannot be achieved in isolation. She described the SIDS Global Business Network Forum as a critical mechanism for deepening cooperation between island nations and attracting the innovative investment needed to sustain long-term development.
The Minister concluded by noting that while the Maldivian economy is small in scale, it remains promising. She called for more innovative approaches to sustainable development, urging the international community to partner with the Maldives to transform environmental and economic challenges into tangible opportunities.
