Foreign Minister Urges Equal Participation for Women in Global Decision-Making

The full, equal, and meaningful participation of women in global decision-making is essential for a balanced international order, Foreign Minister Iruthisham Adam stated on Thursday. Speaking during the observance of the International Day of Women in Diplomacy, the Minister emphasized that empowering women is not merely a matter of equity but a necessity for effective governance.
Addressing a panel discussion titled "Women in Action: Diplomacy across Sectors," organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Minister Adam highlighted the significant contributions women have made to diplomacy across various fields. She stressed the urgent need to dismantle systemic barriers that continue to limit women's full participation in high-level negotiations and international engagement.
The event featured a diverse panel of female leaders from across the Maldivian government, including Aminath Shaina Abdullah from the Ministry of Health, Munshida Ibrahim from the Ministry of Fisheries, Agriculture and Ocean Resources, Faena Fayyaz from the Attorney General’s Office, and Fathimath Usra from the Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy. The discussion, moderated by Mariyam Fathika Fayaz, focused on how women shape international outcomes and advance national interests through strategic negotiation.
Beyond government officials, the event sought to inspire the next generation of leaders. Attendees included members of the diplomatic community and students from several prominent institutions, including the Maldives National University, Villa College, and various high schools. The session opened with remarks from Joint Secretary Mariyam Midhfa Naeem and concluded with a closing statement by Deputy Desk Officer Aminath Isfa Ibrahim.
The Maldives holds a distinguished role in this global observance, having led the United Nations General Assembly Resolution A/RES/76/269. This landmark resolution, which officially proclaimed the International Day of Women in Diplomacy, was adopted with the overwhelming support of 191 member states, cementing the Maldives' commitment to gender equality in the geopolitical arena.
