Abdullah Sadiq has officially taken the oath of office as the Member of Parliament for the Hithadhoo North constituency. The swearing-in ceremony was presided over by Supreme Court Judge Hussain Shahid, after which Sadiq signed the formal declaration of office to assume his duties. Sadiq secured the seat following a by-election held on June 6, receiving 1,375 votes. The vacancy occurred after a court ruling disqualified the previously elected member, Ahmed Sinan, due to an outstanding debt. Representing the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Sadiq's entry into the 20th Parliament increases the party's representation to 13 members, up from the 12 seats they secured during the 2024 parliamentary elections. A seasoned political figure, Sadiq brings significant administrative experience to the legislature. He served three terms as the first Mayor of Addu City and previously held the position of State Minister at the Ministry of Housing and Infrastructure under a previous administration. The 20th Parliament consists of 93 members. The People's National Congress (PNC) maintains a dominant presence with 74 seats. Following Sadiq's swearing-in, the MDP holds 13 seats, while the remaining positions are divided among the Maldives Development Alliance (two members), the Jumhooree Party (one member), the Maldives National Party (one member), and two independent representatives.
