President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has appointed former Agriculture and Animal Welfare Minister Dr Aishath Rameela as a new member of the Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM). The appointment follows parliamentary approval on October 29, filling the vacancy created by the completion of former commission president Mariyam Muna's term. Dr Rameela was formally sworn in during a ceremony at the President's Office on Wednesday, with Supreme Court Justice Dr Mohamed Ibrahim administering the oath of office. President Muizzu personally presented her with the official letter of appointment during the proceedings. Dr Rameela previously served as the first minister appointed to the Agriculture Ministry under the current administration. She resigned from her cabinet position on December 1, 2024, citing health reasons. The Human Rights Commission now comprises five members, including Vice-President Mohamed Shafeeq Mahmood and members Samau Ahmed Najeeb, Ismail Habeeb, and Ahmed Maqsoom.
