Former Chief Justice Dr. Ahmed Abdulla Didi has sharply criticized the economic and foreign policies of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's government, warning that they endanger the country's sovereignty and independence. In a statement following the President's Victory Day speech, Dr. Didi highlighted concerns over the Rasmalé project and the nation's growing debt, arguing that the government's actions are eroding the fundamental pillars of the state. Dr. Didi questioned the President's commitment to preserving the nation's sovereignty, pointing to reports of non-Muslims being settled in Rasmalé and alleging that the government is facilitating this against centuries-old traditions. He also criticized the handling of the Chagos issue, suggesting that the President's actions were self-serving, and noted the resignation of the Pension Office's head manager and board chairman over spending concerns. Addressing the President's Victory Day remarks, Dr. Didi asked which national pillar the President is ensuring is not diminished, listing the three pillars as Maldivian citizens, the territory of the state, and the government. He expressed doubt about whether President Muizzu truly understands the implications of his words, and warned that the implementation of certain agreements could lead to geopolitical issues and changes in the demographic structure of the Maldives, potentially resulting in the loss of sovereignty, independence, freedom, and religious unity.
