Former High Court Judges Sameer and Rauf Apply for Supreme Court Vacancy

Politics ·
Two former High Court judges, Ali Sameer and Abdurraouf Ibrahim, have applied for the position of Supreme Court judge, according to sources. The vacancy arises from the retirement of Supreme Court Judge Ali Rashid next month. The application period closed at 10 am today, and the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has not yet officially confirmed the applications. Sameer most recently served as Deputy Prosecutor General, a post he resigned from on 28 October 2024, after being appointed on 12 May 2022. He previously served as a High Court judge from March 2011 to May 2022. Rauf, who was most recently appointed as a High Court judge in February, also served as a High Court judge from March 2011 to May 2022. Both resigned from the High Court while facing JSC investigations into allegations they accepted apartments as favours from the government under former President Abdulla Yameen.
