Former MDP President Abdulla Shahid Arrested on Child Sexual Assault Allegations; Son Claims Political Motive

Former Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) President Abdulla Shahid was arrested from his residence in Malé in the evening on suspicion of sexually assaulting a child, according to reports. He is currently being held at Dhoonidhoo. Shahid's son, Musa Yameen Shahid, posted on X late last night, stating that while his father's arrest was distressing, numerous questions have arisen concerning it. Yameen said, "My father has previously stated that these allegations are a crime conducted for political purposes to defame him." Yameen expressed certainty in his father's character, saying, "I know my father's character, the principles he holds dear, and what kind of person he is. I am certain that he never committed the acts alleged against him. And I remain completely firm with my father." He also called for fair legal due process, stating, "Our family remains firm alongside our father. We will not back down." Shahid, who served as former Foreign Minister and former President of the UN General Assembly, was arrested while campaigning to secure the MDP ticket for the upcoming presidential election.
