Former Ministers Thoriq Ibrahim and Adam Shareef Nominated as Envoys to UAE and Qatar

Politics ·
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has submitted requests to the Parliament for the appointment of former cabinet ministers Thoriq Ibrahim and Adam Shareef Umar as international ambassadors to the United Arab Emirates and Qatar, respectively. According to official correspondence sent to the legislature, Thoriq Ibrahim is nominated to represent the Maldives in the UAE. Ibrahim transitions to the foreign service after serving in key roles within the current administration, where he previously held the portfolios of Minister of Climate Change, Environment and Energy, and Minister of Environment and Tourism. In a concurrent diplomatic move, President Muizzu has nominated Adam Shareef Umar to serve as the envoy to Qatar. Umar brings extensive domestic administrative expertise to the role, having most recently served as the Minister of Cities, Local Government and Public Works. The nominations are part of a strategic executive reorganization. Both officials resigned from their ministerial posts to provide the President with the flexibility required to implement structural changes within the cabinet. Following their departures from the cabinet, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs appointed both individuals to the rank of ambassador-at-large before these specific diplomatic assignments were proposed. These appointments signal a shift in the administration's approach to its diplomatic corps, leveraging the experience of former high-ranking domestic officials to strengthen bilateral ties with key Gulf partners. The nominations now await the formal approval of the Majlis, the Maldivian Parliament, before the appointments can be finalized.
