Former MP Aameeth: Maldives economy has fallen into deepest pit ever

Politics ·
Former Maduvvaru constituency Member of the People's Majlis, Mohamed Aameeth, has stated that Maldivians have never seen the economy fall to such a low level, and that the government has been unable to rescue the situation. Speaking on Raajje TV's Falasurhee program, Aameeth said the country's economy has fallen into a deeper pit than ever before, with ordinary citizens left in a destitute state and prices of goods rising to unprecedented levels. He criticized the Dollar Marketing regulations, saying they have had an adverse effect on the income of resort employees. Aameeth noted that many resorts have been compelled to change salaries previously paid in dollars to Rufiyaa, resulting in a significant reduction in take-home income for employees and hardship for average families. He also said the Economic Minister should have resigned before the People's Majlis moved close to a vote of no confidence, and that the government's claims of managing the economy well do not match its actions. Aameeth added that the MDP has fulfilled its legal responsibilities and that its parliamentary group has done important work on behalf of citizens' rights.
