Former MP Ali Hussain Says Rasmale Project Unconstitutional, Calls for Public Protests

Politics ·
Former MP and legal lawyer Ali Hussain has declared that the Rasmale project is unconstitutional and called on the public to take to the streets to halt it. Speaking at a forum titled "Dhivehinnge bin Dhivehinnge" (Maldives' land for Maldivians), Hussain stated that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu is fully aware that the project violates the Constitution. He questioned why the President sent a minister to sign the agreement instead of doing so himself, suggesting it was to avoid future responsibility. Hussain noted that the Auditor General's Office had initially advised that the project was unconstitutional and could not proceed without proper laws. He has filed cases with the Supreme Court and the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). The Supreme Court initially refused to hear the case, but Hussain has appealed that decision. He expressed concern that the ACC has not acted despite 500 hectares of land being allocated without a public bid. Urging citizens to exercise their constitutional right to assemble without prior permission, Hussain called for immediate protests to stop the project and hold the government accountable.
