Former Police Commissioner Hameed Criticizes Police Board, Calls for Greater Transparency
Politics ·
Former Maldives Police Commissioner Mohamed Hameed has voiced concerns over the establishment of the Police Board, describing it as a move that lacks transparency and fails to serve the nation effectively. In a blog post, Hameed highlighted that the Police Board, introduced under the revised Police Service Act in March 2021, is not functioning as an independent body. He argued that the board should not have the authority to appoint or dismiss the Police Commissioner or Deputy Commissioners, as it undermines democratic oversight.
Hameed emphasized that the Police Board’s structure, which includes members appointed by the President and the public, risks politicizing the police force. He suggested that the board’s responsibilities should focus on professionalizing leadership, ensuring accountability, and improving operational efficiency without compromising the police force’s independence. Hameed also called for the introduction of mechanisms to address police misconduct and enhance transparency.
The Police Board, comprising five members, was established to oversee the police force’s leadership and operations. However, Hameed believes it needs significant reforms to better serve the public interest and maintain the integrity of law enforcement in the Maldives.
