The foundation has been laid for a major 2,000-unit housing project in Kulhudhuffushi City, marking the start of a government-led effort to address the island's chronic housing shortage.
The ceremony was attended by key officials, including Minister of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure Dr. Abdulla Muththalib, Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources Ahmed Shiyam, and Managing Director of the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) Ali Zuhair. The project has been awarded to the international firm Team One India Private Limited under a contractor financing model.
HDC Managing Director Ali Zuhair emphasized the project's significance. "Today, we are commencing important work to provide a permanent solution to the housing crisis in Kulhudhuffushi," he stated. "This is the day residents’ dreams of obtaining housing become a reality."
The development will see the construction of 13 towers, each 14 storeys high. The apartments will be three-room units spanning 900 square feet and will be equipped with modern facilities. The project comprises a mix of 1,856 residential flats and privately owned homes.
This initiative follows a separate, previously stalled 400-unit housing project launched in Kulhudhuffushi in May 2023. That project was transferred to the HDC in 2025, with practical work now scheduled to resume alongside the new, larger development. The government states the combined efforts aim to provide an adequate, long-term solution for residents facing a lack of housing on the island.
