Foundation Work Begins on New $11.1 Million Hospital for Meemu Atoll

Construction has officially commenced on a new 50-bed hospital in Muli, marking a critical upgrade to healthcare infrastructure for the residents of Meemu Atoll. The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) confirmed that foundation work is now underway for the facility, which is expected to transform medical access for the region. The project was inaugurated on May 20 last year by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu during an official visit to the island. The new four-storey building will expand the capacity of the Muli Regional Hospital, the primary healthcare hub for an atoll population of approximately 7,400 people. Spanning over 32,000 square feet, the USD 11.1 million development includes the main hospital block and a separate administrative office building. Once completed, the facility will offer a comprehensive range of specialized services, including an operating theatre, emergency room, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), and a pediatric ward. Patients will also have access to dental services, physiotherapy, radiology, and private consultation rooms. To enhance the patient experience, the design incorporates private rooms, a dedicated meeting space, and a children's play area, ensuring a more holistic approach to care. For over 30 years, the people of Meemu Atoll have relied on the existing Muli Regional Hospital. However, the facility has seen limited development in recent decades despite its strategic importance to the community. This new investment addresses long-standing gaps in service and infrastructure, promising a higher standard of care for residents who previously faced limitations in local treatment options. The expansion represents a significant shift toward decentralized healthcare, reducing the need for patients to travel to Malé for essential medical procedures and specialized care.
