Funaadhoo Council seeks residents' views on fuel business plots after fatal fire
Local News ·
In connection with the tragic fire incident that occurred in Funaadhoo, the Funaadhoo Council has sought consultations and opinions from residents regarding concerns about plots of land currently available for sale to start fuel businesses on the island. During a public meeting held by the council, discussions covered not only concerns related to the fire incident of October 25 but also measures to prevent similar incidents in the future, along with opportunities and challenges in providing fuel services quickly at affordable prices. The fire that broke out at the Funaadhoo petrol shed on October 25 morning spread to nearby buildings, including a garage repairing motorcycles and engines, a mosque, a small garage used for vehicle parking, and a house where people were living, rendering the affected places unusable. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) made temporary accommodation and food arrangements for 11 people living in the damaged house. Police reported that assistance was provided to 18 people who were injured or required medical treatment, including a firefighter treated for smoke inhalation and a hospital staff member, with the remaining 16 sustaining various injuries while seeking safety or requiring treatment due to fear and panic. A special team from the Major Crime Investigation department of the police has been sent to Funaadhoo to seal off the incident area, investigate the cause of the fire, and assist with processing CCTV footage. The Funaadhoo Council expressed gratitude to all parties that provided assistance in connection with this incident.
