Politics ·
Construction has officially begun on a new hospital in Gadhdhoo, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, marking a significant upgrade to healthcare infrastructure for the island's 2,700 residents. Health Minister Abdullah Nazim Ibrahim inaugurated the project during a ceremony held on the island. The development includes a comprehensive facility featuring a 30-bed, two-storey hospital building, a separate single-storey service block, and a two-storey accommodation block for medical staff. The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has been awarded the contract to complete the project within 600 days at a cost of $6.6 million. Currently, Gadhdhoo residents receive medical services from the island's existing health centre. The new hospital represents a substantial expansion of healthcare capacity, promising enhanced medical facilities and services for the local community. The project timeline indicates completion within approximately 20 months, bringing modern hospital services closer to residents who previously relied on more basic healthcare infrastructure.
