German Military Paratrooper Unit Investigated for Alleged Misconduct and Extremism
International ·
Germany's defense ministry has condemned "unacceptable" abuses within an elite paratrooper regiment amid ongoing investigations into alleged sexual misconduct and right-wing extremism. The probe focuses on a unit based in the southwestern town of Zweibruecken and was initiated after two female soldiers filed complaints in June. Reports indicate that dozens of soldiers are under investigation for abuses, including sexual assault, extremist incidents, violent rituals, and drug use. Defense ministry spokesperson Kenneth Harms confirmed disciplinary actions, including dismissals, have been taken, and the regiment's commander was replaced earlier this year. Harms emphasized that neither extremism nor inappropriate behavior is tolerated in the Bundeswehr, and those responsible will face appropriate consequences. Investigations have been launched against 55 suspects, with 19 dismissal proceedings initiated and 16 cases referred to prosecutors. This incident follows previous revelations of extremism within Germany's armed forces, including the dissolution of a commando unit in 2020 due to neo-Nazi sympathies among its members.
