German Tourist Arrivals Surpass 50,000 as Maldives Sees Steady Recovery

The Maldives has welcomed over 50,000 tourists from Germany this year, cementing Germany's position as the fifth-largest source market for the island nation. The latest data released by the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation highlights a diversifying visitor base as the country continues to attract global travelers. Overall arrivals have reached 745,706 visitors so far this year, representing a 3.5 percent increase compared to 2025 figures. This growth persists despite external pressures, including geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, which previously caused a dip in visitor numbers. However, the Ministry notes that arrival figures are now gradually recovering. In a strong showing for the second quarter, 97,000 travelers arrived in April alone. When looking at the top five contributing nations, China leads the market with 109,228 visitors, followed by Russia with 93,602, the United Kingdom with 69,627, and Italy with 62,651. Germany rounds out the top five with 50,186 arrivals. Accommodation preferences remain heavily skewed toward the luxury sector. The majority of visitors, totaling 506,606, opted for resort stays. Guesthouses continued to be a popular alternative for budget-conscious and community-focused travelers, hosting 186,904 guests, while 20,084 visitors stayed in hotels. Transport data confirms the dominance of air travel as the primary gateway to the archipelago. Of the total arrivals, 735,355 visitors entered the country by air, while a smaller segment of 10,351 travelers arrived via sea routes.
