Ghafoor Assures Independence as Interim MDP Chair, Party Postpones Permanent Election
Politics ·
Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Interim Chairman and Hanimaadhoo MP Abdul Ghafoor Moosa (Gapo) has assured party members that he will act solely within the party’s rules and regulations, free from external influence. Ghafoor made this commitment during a National Assembly meeting on December 8, 2025, following his election as interim chair. Former Economic Minister Fayyaz Ismail, who served as MDP Chairman since May 2022, resigned on November 23, citing internal unrest and the need for fresh leadership. Ghafoor emphasized his independence, stating, 'I am not going to do something for a certain person, I am not going to follow the influence of a certain person.' The party has decided to postpone the election of a permanent chairperson until after the upcoming local council elections, opting for an interim leader to guide the party through this period. Factional disputes have historically shaped the MDP's trajectory, with former President Mohamed Nasheed rejoining the party in June 2025 after a two-year hiatus. Fayyaz acknowledged in his resignation letter that internal differences had caused significant unrest among members.
