Ghafoor Urges Presidential Hopefuls to Prioritize Party Interests

Politics ·
Abdul Ghafoor Moosa, the newly appointed interim Chairperson of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), has called on members with presidential ambitions to prioritize the party's interests above their own. Ghafoor, who was elected with 65 out of 66 votes during the party's National Council meeting on Monday, emphasized the importance of unity and reconciliation within the party. He stated that every member should be given equal rights and that the MDP would not divide over differences of opinion. Ghafoor also assured that the results of the internal primary elections would be transparent and that the party would work to resolve any issues. The MDP faced significant division during the 2023 presidential election, which contributed to their loss. With the 2028 presidential election approaching, several prominent figures, including former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and former Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid, are expected to compete for the party's nomination.
