President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has inspected the progress of the major land reclamation project at Giraavaru Falhu, a central initiative in his administration's push to alleviate the nation's housing shortage. During the site visit, he was briefed by officials including Construction Minister Dr. Abdulla Muththalib and MACL Managing Director Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed.
The ambitious project is unfolding in two phases. The first phase, handled by the Maldives Fund Management Corporation, successfully reclaimed 70 hectares. In the ongoing second phase, the Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) is reclaiming 97.15 hectares, with 35 hectares already finished. To date, 105 hectares of the total 167.15-hectare target have been completed.
President Muizzu has provided regular public updates on the project's timeline via social media. He stated that reclamation and land plot survey works are expected to conclude by the end of April, with the handover of plots to beneficiaries scheduled to begin in June.
Reclamation operations, which commenced on 30 January 2026, are being accelerated using two large dredgers. The work is being carried out simultaneously by the 'Queen of the Netherlands,' with a capacity of 35,000 cubic metres, and the 'Oranje,' with a capacity of 22,000 cubic metres. The project represents a significant infrastructural investment aimed at creating new land for residential development in the Greater Malé region.
