Male', Maldives – The Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has reported significant progress on the Giravaarafalu land reclamation project, stating that 68.8 percent of the work has been completed. According to a post on X today by MACL, which is carrying out the work, 115 hectares of land have been reclaimed so far, out of a planned total of 167.15 hectares from the lagoon. MACL noted that the container ship Queen of the Netherlands is playing an important role in continuing the large-scale reclamation work. During a press conference in September, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu said a contract had been signed with the contractor and payment made for the land reclamation of the lagoon, adding that the area would be completely reclaimed within this year. Housing and Infrastructure Minister Dr. Abdullah Muthalik had previously stated that a total of 169 hectares of land needed to be reclaimed from Giravaarafalu to release plots, but the previous government had only reclaimed 54 hectares. The Minister stated that once the reclamation work is completed, land registration will be done and the process of handing over plots to recipients will continue.
