Government Achieves 67 Percent of Health and Social Assistance Targets

The Maldivian government has met 67 percent of its targets across the health, family, and social assistance sectors, according to Minister of Health, Family and Welfare Geela Ali. The Minister revealed these figures during a presentation on health sector developments at the People’s National Congress (PNC) Congress 2026. Minister Geela detailed a comprehensive roadmap of 478 health-sector commitments, noting that a significant portion has already been fulfilled. To date, the administration has reached 244 decisions regarding health and social welfare, while managing 835 ongoing health projects and completing 8,384 individual activities. Comparing current progress with the previous administration, Minister Geela highlighted a substantial increase in investment. The current government has awarded projects worth USD 387.81 million in nearly three years, more than double the USD 169.91 million awarded by the previous government over a full five-year term. Infrastructure development has seen a similar surge. The current administration has initiated 40 hospital projects and 22 new health centers, contrasting with 16 hospitals and 14 health centers started during the previous term. Additionally, 89 health facility upgrades have been implemented in the last three years, nearly matching the 102 upgrades completed by the previous government over five years. Supporting these figures, Ibrahim Abdul Razzaq Haleem, CEO of the Male’ City Group of Hospitals, emphasized the government's focus on resource availability and public convenience. He highlighted the standardization of the Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) operation-theatre complex to international levels and the establishment of a 75-bed multi-specialty surgical wing. Mr. Haleem also noted that the administration of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu successfully brought the Dharumavantha Hospital building into full operation. He added that the government continues to prioritize improvements across health facilities in the Male’ region to ensure faster and more reliable medical services for the public.
