Government aims to boost agriculture with training, financial support: Minister Shiyam

The Maldives government's goal is to expand the agricultural sector and provide farmers with more training and financial opportunities, according to Minister of Fisheries and Agriculture Ahmed Shiyam. Speaking at a ceremony in Addu Meedhoo to mark World Food Day and National Farmers' Day, Shiyam said the government has initiated revolutionary changes in the sector in line with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's vision. He highlighted that agriculture, like fisheries, is a vital industry requiring special attention and support. The minister noted the challenges posed by the Maldives' geography as a low-lying island nation, but emphasised that year-round farming is possible. Shiyam stressed that ensuring food security is a top government priority, linking it to national security. He pointed out that over 90% of food consumed in the Maldives is imported, with $60 million worth of fruits and vegetables imported annually, including 73 million rufiyaa of onions and 105 million rufiyaa of cabbage and lettuce last year. The government aims to reduce this dependence by increasing support for local farmers.
