Government Amends Housing Allocation Policy Following President’s Directive
Politics ·
The Maldivian government has revised its housing allocation policy under the directive of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. The new policy aims to provide additional opportunities to individuals who have previously been allocated flats under the government’s housing scheme. The amendment addresses concerns over fairness and accessibility in housing allocations, particularly for families with children under 18. Under the revised policy, if a family with children under 18 is allocated a flat, they will have the option to return the flat to the government after 18 years, allowing them to be eligible for future housing schemes. Additionally, families with two children under 18 will also have similar opportunities. The Housing Ministry stated that this change aims to ensure equity and remove uncertainties faced by beneficiaries of the housing scheme. Furthermore, President Muizzu announced plans to address housing issues in Malé by offering 15,000 plots to residents of Malé and those who have lived there for an extended period.
