Senior government officials and tourism industry leaders have convened to address critical challenges facing the Maldives' primary economic driver and strategize on achieving long-term growth targets. The high-level dialogue focused on increasing tourist arrivals and ensuring the sector remains competitive as it works toward the government's 2027 tourism goals.
The meeting was attended by a delegation of cabinet members, including Minister of Tourism and Civil Aviation Mohamed Ameen, Minister of Finance and Public Enterprises Hassan Zareer, Minister of Economic Development, Transport and Trade Mohamed Saeed, and Attorney General Ahmed Usham. Commissioner General of Taxation Fathmath Azeema also participated, highlighting the meeting's focus on the intersection of policy, finance, and industry operations.
Central to the discussions were recommendations from industry stakeholders aimed at streamlining operations and overcoming current hurdles. The Ministry of Tourism confirmed that key goals were agreed upon during the session, with the government pledging continued support to ensure the industry's sustainability and growth.
A significant point of tension currently facing the sector is the recent amendment to the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Act. Industry stakeholders have expressed concerns that the changes could impact the sector's viability. In response, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has committed to reviewing the amendment. While the government has not yet detailed the specific changes that will be implemented, the review aims to balance state fiscal needs with the needs of tourism operators.
This collaborative effort coincides with the launch of the 'Visit Maldives Year' promotional campaign. President Muizzu has designated the upcoming year as a pivotal period for tourism recovery and expansion, emphasizing a national campaign that requires the active participation of all stakeholders to maximize the global visibility of the archipelago.
