Government Brings Subsidised Fuel Rates to Eight Atolls Across Maldives

The Maldivian government has expanded its nationwide energy network, establishing Fuel Supplies Maldives (FSM) fuel sheds across eight islands in eight different atolls. This initiative aims to provide fishermen, industrial workers, and residents with direct access to fuel at standard State Trading Organization (STO) rates. Minister of Economic Development, Transport and Trade, Mohamed Saeed, confirmed the rollout as part of a key electoral pledge made by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu. For years, residents in remote atolls have been forced to rely on private suppliers, often paying inflated prices or traveling long distances to source affordable fuel. "This is a major achievement that will directly lower energy expenditures, shorten travel times, and reduce the hardships long faced by our citizens, particularly our fishermen," Minister Saeed stated, emphasizing the immediate economic relief the project provides to the maritime sector. The currently active sites include Ihavandhoo in Haa Alifu Atoll, Hanimaadhoo in Haa Dhaalu Atoll, Milandhoo in Shaviyani Atoll, Dhuvaafaru in Raa Atoll, Eydhafushi in Baa Atoll, Meedhoo and Kudahuvadhoo in Dhaalu Atoll, and Nilandhoo in Faafu Atoll. Launched in November 2024, the broader infrastructure project targets the installation of fuel skids across 18 strategic islands. The Ministry of Economic Development has confirmed that construction and installation are accelerating to meet the government's ultimate objective: ensuring these vital energy services are available in every atoll and city in the Maldives by November 2027.
