Government Launches 113 Housing Projects to Resolve Nationwide Residential Shortage

The Government of Maldives is currently implementing 113 housing projects across the archipelago to provide a permanent solution to the chronic residential shortages facing the population, according to the Ministry of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development. Addressing the country's housing crisis has been established as a primary objective under the administration of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu. While previous governments have introduced various housing schemes in both the capital and the atolls, rapid population growth and intensifying demand have ensured that housing remains one of the most pressing social challenges in the country. The current nationwide initiative distributes development across all regions. The Malé region leads with 21 projects, followed by Addu City and Haa Dhaalu Atoll with nine projects each. Further developments include eight projects in Gaafu Alifu, seven in both Baa and Raa Atolls, and six each in Gaafu Dhaalu, Thaa, Meemu, and Lhaviyani Atolls. Other projects are spread across Laamu, Haa Alifu, Dhaalu, Fuvahmulah City, Alifu Alifu, Noonu, Shaviyani, and Alifu Dhaalu Atolls. President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has emphasized that his administration intends to provide secure housing to a larger number of citizens than any previous government. He further assured the public that these projects are being conducted transparently and free from outside influence. The government views the housing crisis not merely as an infrastructure failure, but as a social urgency. Many Maldivian families currently live in overcrowded, confined spaces, which officials state contributes to increased family instability and a lack of basic privacy. By expanding the available housing stock, the administration aims to improve the overall well-being of families and ensure the long-term stability of Maldivian society.
