Government Launches 1,190 Affordable Homes in Hulhumalé

Politics ·
The government has commenced construction on 1,190 new affordable housing units in Hulhumalé Phase II, marking a significant step in its pledge to address the nation's housing shortage. Construction Minister Dr. Abdulla Muththalib emphasized that housing is a fundamental human right, not a political tool, during the project's groundbreaking ceremony officiated by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. Dr. Muththalib outlined the administration's dual-track approach to housing security. First-time homebuyers using bank loans will soon have access to units at affordable prices. Simultaneously, the government is advancing a lease-to-own model specifically designed for low-income families who cannot access conventional financing. The minister highlighted the acute need in Malé, where many families lack adequate space to live comfortably. He assured that these families would not be overlooked, with administrative arrangements for a special housing policy for the needy already in progress. "A compassionate government will try to help the less fortunate who need assistance," Dr. Muththalib stated. He stressed that different societal segments require tailored solutions, reaffirming the government's commitment to treating permanent housing as a basic security for every Maldivian citizen. The project under the BML Affordable Housing initiative represents a core part of this effort to deliver on that promise.
