The government has introduced five significant social security and health programmes as part of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's election promises. These initiatives were officially launched by Health Minister Abdullah Nazim Ibrahim and Social and Family Development Minister Dr Aishath Shiham. Key highlights include monthly financial support of USD 130 for thalassemia patients, effective from January 1, 2026, and an expansion of the national health insurance scheme, Aasandha, to cover all therapy services at private hospitals and mental health treatment costs. Additionally, Maldivian students and citizens in the Philippines can now access overseas medical support under the Meranaa scheme, with 65% of costs covered by the government. Single parents will also receive increased financial assistance, with a monthly allowance of USD 195 per child, up to four children per family. All initiatives will take effect from January 1, 2026.
