Government Launches Nationwide Campaign to Combat Tobacco and Nicotine Use
World ·
The Maldivian Cabinet has approved a comprehensive national campaign designed to educate the public on the dangers of tobacco and nicotine, marking a significant escalation in the government's public health strategy.
To ensure the initiative reaches every corner of the archipelago, the Ministry of Health, Family and Welfare will appoint representatives from every inhabited island. The campaign's first phase will focus on mobilizing at least one association from each atoll, alongside several organizations within the Male' metropolitan area.
Central to this strategy is the implementation of a "generational ban," which the government intends to integrate directly into the national school system. This initiative will be executed through a coordinated framework between the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Skills Development, ensuring that the youth are protected from nicotine addiction through early intervention and education.
Beyond schools, the government is targeting the sporting community to foster a healthier lifestyle among the youth. The campaign will specifically engage youth associations and sports groups across the islands. The Cabinet intends to set specific targets to encourage athletes to remain tobacco-free, with the ultimate goal of ensuring that national sports teams consist entirely of athletes who do not use tobacco.
These decisions follow a review by a subcommittee tasked with examining cigarette import duty rates. By combining economic measures with grassroots awareness and educational mandates, the government aims to create a sustainable environment that discourages tobacco use across all demographics. This multi-sectoral approach reflects a broader commitment to improving national health outcomes and reducing the long-term burden of nicotine-related illnesses on the state healthcare system.
