Government Launches Nature Park Development Across 10 Selected Maldivian Islands
Politics ·
The Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy has officially commenced the development of nature parks across 10 islands, marking a significant step toward expanding the Maldives' protected green spaces. This initiative follows a policy finalized by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to establish at least one nature park in every atoll across the archipelago.
The project began with a nationwide call for proposals in early 2024. According to the Ministry, a high volume of submissions was received and rigorously evaluated. The 10 islands selected for the first phase of development were those that achieved the highest scores during the assessment process.
The selected locations span various regions: Molhadhoo in Haa Alif Atoll, Kumundhoo in Haa Dhaalu Atoll, Landhoo in Noonu Atoll, Huraa in Kaafu Atoll, Omadhoo in Alif Dhaalu Atoll, Kolhufushi in Meemu Atoll, Kin’bidhoo in Thaa Atoll, Gan in Laamu Atoll, Kondey in Gaafu Alif Atoll, and Fiyoari in Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll.
To ensure the parks meet local needs and preserve specific ecological values, the Ministry collaborated closely with the respective island councils to determine the concept and scope of each project. The government is currently finalizing the legal framework and signing grant agreements with these councils to secure funding and operational guidelines.
This expansion builds upon existing successes in Fuvahmulah City and Addu City, where established nature parks have already demonstrated a positive impact. Beyond environmental conservation, these parks are designed to stimulate the local tourism sector and provide tangible economic benefits to island communities by creating new attractions and sustainable livelihoods.
