Government Launches 'Shamil' Logo to Promote Products by Disabled Artisans
Politics ·
The Maldivian government has officially launched the 'Shamil' logo, a national brand identity aimed at supporting and marketing products crafted by persons with disabilities, enhancing their economic inclusion and social recognition.
Unveiled in 2025 through a collaboration between the Ministry of Social and Family Development and the Business Center Corporation (BCC), the Shamil logo establishes a recognized mark that highlights the skills and creativity of disabled artisans. It is designed to promote social inclusion and financial independence by allowing consumers to easily identify and support goods made by registered individuals.
Minister of Social and Family Development Dr Aishath Shiham announced the launch during a press conference at the President’s Office. She emphasized that the initiative will raise public awareness and increase demand for these products. 'When buyers see the Shamil logo, they will know they are purchasing something made by a person with special needs,' Dr Shiham said. 'This creates dignity, boosts confidence and opens doors to broader markets.'
The minister noted that handicrafts produced by persons with disabilities are already displayed at Velana International Airport, with discussions underway to expand Shamil-branded products to international platforms, including United Nations venues abroad.
To qualify for the logo, artisans must be registered on the National Disability Register, have created the product independently, and hold any necessary permits. Entrepreneurs can apply by downloading the application form from the BCC website at bcc.mv and submitting it via email to [email protected]. This program aligns with broader efforts to integrate persons with disabilities into the Maldivian economy, recognizing their contributions and fostering a more inclusive society.
