Government Opens Six New Fuel Stations to Lower Costs for Island Fishermen

The Maldivian government has established fuel stations across six islands, marking a significant step in a nationwide initiative to improve fuel accessibility and reduce operational costs for local fishing communities. The project was launched in response to growing concerns from fishermen regarding the scarcity and high cost of fuel in remote islands. By expanding storage and distribution infrastructure, the government aims to ensure a more reliable and affordable supply chain for those whose livelihoods depend on the sea. President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu directed the development of these regional storage facilities to directly benefit the fishing sector. The first facility under this strategic rollout was inaugurated in Dhuvaafaru, Raa Atoll, coinciding with Fishermen’s Day 2025. This is part of a broader master plan to establish fuel stations on a total of 18 islands across the archipelago. The current phase of the rollout includes new stations in Dhuvaafaru (Raa Atoll), Ihavandhoo (Haa Alifu Atoll), Hanimaadhoo (Haa Dhaalu Atoll), Milandhoo (Shaviyani Atoll), and Eydhafushi (Baa Atoll). Additionally, Fuel Supplies Maldives (FSM) has opened a separate facility in Kudahuvadhoo, Dhaalu Atoll. To further enhance regional capacity, the State Trading Organisation (STO) has been tasked with introducing an additional fuel bowser in Fuvahmulah City. This move is intended to stabilize refueling arrangements and prevent shortages in the southern region. Beyond these new installations, FSM continues to provide essential services in Greater Male', Gan and Hulhumeedhoo in Addu City, Kooddoo, Fuvahmulah City, Thinadhoo City, and Felivaru. The government maintains that the ultimate goal of the project is to ensure that consistent, affordable fuel access is a reality for both the general public and the fishing industry across all atolls.
