Government Prioritizes Fiscal Discipline Over Recent Fitch Credit Rating Upgrade

Politics ·
Chief Government Spokesperson Mohamed Hussain Shareef has stated that maintaining state expenditure within the approved budget without incurring additional debt is a more significant milestone than the Maldives' recent credit rating upgrade by Fitch. Speaking during the latest session of the 'Presser with the Spox' series, Shareef characterized the Fitch rating as a positive development, though not a major shift. He noted that while a higher rating enhances the nation's economic perception and attracts further investment, the internal ability to manage finances responsibly remains the primary achievement. The Spokesperson attributed this fiscal discipline to strategic, though often unpopular, measures implemented under the leadership of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu. Key factors included comprehensive tax system reforms, strict expenditure controls, and a more accurate alignment between projected and actual revenue streams. Shareef emphasized that the administration is prioritizing long-term national interests over short-term political gains. As part of this forward-looking approach, he revealed that the government plans to consult with stakeholders regarding a proposed ban on specific social media applications for children under the age of 16. Addressing the ongoing challenges in the healthcare sector, the Spokesperson highlighted the need for a systemic overhaul of medical procurement. He suggested that establishing a State Pharma system could resolve long-standing shortages of essential medicines and medical supplies, ensuring a more stable supply chain for the public. By focusing on structural reforms—from fiscal management to healthcare procurement—the government aims to secure sustainable national development rather than seeking immediate electoral advantages, according to Shareef.
