Government Schools Open Applications for A-Level June Intake to Boost Student Enrollment

Politics ·
The Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Skills Development has officially opened applications for the June intake of A-Level studies across government schools. Eligible students have until May 28 to submit their applications for admission into higher secondary education. Admission is open to students who have completed their O-Level studies and meet the age requirements. Generally, applicants must be aged 16 or younger by the end of 2025. However, the ministry has provided flexibility for students who completed Grade 10 through the formal school system; these individuals may still enroll if they are eligible for Grade 11, provided they are under 18 years of age. Eligibility is determined by performance in SSC, GCE O-Level, IGCSE, and BTEC examinations. Students who have passed between three and five subjects are eligible for A-Level studies. Additionally, those under the Individual Curriculum Plan can qualify for admission if they have obtained at least a “C” grade in two subjects. Schools will begin notifying parents regarding placements starting May 25. Once a placement is confirmed, the respective school will provide parents with the necessary registration details and further instructions. This intake comes amid a strategic effort by the government to decentralize higher secondary education. A pilot A-Level program has been launched in 23 schools across islands outside the capital, Malé, aiming to make advanced studies more accessible to students in the atolls. This initiative has already yielded significant results, with the number of students enrolled in A-Levels within government schools surging by 77 percent compared to the previous year.
