Government Seeks Consultancy for Rasmale’-Male’ Transport Masterplan as Dredging Nears Completion
Politics ·
The Maldives government has invited consultancy firms to prepare a Transport Master Plan and conduct a feasibility study for connecting Rasmale’ and Male’, including an underwater tunnel. The announcement comes as the Rasmale’ land reclamation project nears completion. The Ministry of Finance, on behalf of the Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure, is seeking firms with technical expertise and experience in similar projects to develop a comprehensive plan for safe, reliable, and sustainable connectivity between the two regions. Interested firms must submit Expressions of Interest by December 24. President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu inaugurated the Rasmale’ project in December 2023, labeling it the largest housing initiative in the country. Dredging, initially expected to take six months, is now set to conclude by March or April 2026. The proposed underwater tunnel, announced in January 2024, faces technical challenges, as highlighted by Infrastructure Minister Dr. Abdulla Muthalib in October 2025.
