Government Sets Strict Tobacco-Free Targets for National Team Athletes
World ·
The Maldivian Cabinet has announced a new mandate to establish specific targets ensuring that athletes representing the country in national teams remain entirely free from tobacco use. The move aims to protect the health of the nation's top sporting talent and promote a culture of wellness within competitive athletics.
This decision was reached during a recent Cabinet meeting, where officials discussed a broader strategy to combat nicotine addiction across the Maldives. Central to these discussions was the implementation of a 'generational ban,' a policy designed to prevent future generations from starting the habit by restricting the sale of tobacco products to those born after a certain year.
To support these goals, the government will expand its national awareness campaign regarding the dangers of tobacco and nicotine. This expanded outreach will move beyond central administration, actively involving youth associations across the various islands and various sports organizations to reach a wider, more diverse demographic.
Beyond public awareness, the Cabinet is also exploring economic levers to reduce tobacco consumption. A specialized subcommittee was tasked with reviewing current cigarette import duty rates, presenting an update on its progress during the meeting. The review suggests that adjusting taxes on tobacco imports may be a key component in deterring use.
By integrating sports policy with public health initiatives, the government seeks to create a comprehensive framework that discourages tobacco use through both education and regulation. These measures reflect a wider effort to improve public health outcomes and ensure that the Maldives' athletes can compete at their peak physical capacity, unhindered by the effects of nicotine.
