Government Subsidizes Fuel for Fishermen to Combat Rising Global Oil Prices
Politics ·
The Maldivian government has launched an emergency fuel support initiative to protect the national fishing industry from the impact of surging global oil prices triggered by unrest in the Middle East.
Under the direction of President Mohamed Muizzu, the government has implemented measures to provide affordable fuel to fishing vessels, ensuring that operations remain viable despite volatile international markets. The initiative aims to prevent disruptions in the supply chain and reduce the heavy operational burden currently facing local fishers.
State Minister for Fisheries and Agriculture Mohamed Muththalib identified fluctuating oil prices as the single greatest challenge facing the fisheries sector. To address this, the State Trading Organisation (STO) has arranged for fishermen targeting large fish species to access fuel at controlled rates within the Malé area. Simultaneously, the Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) has facilitated adjusted pricing for fish suppliers to ensure continuity of service.
While distribution initially focused on key hubs such as Hulhumalé and Himmafushi for large-scale operations, and Felivaru, Kooddoo, and Hulhumeedhoo in Addu City, the government has since expanded the program. Access to subsidized fuel is now available across 13 islands equipped with STO fuel sheds, broadening the safety net for smaller fishing communities.
Minister Muththalib acknowledged that procuring fuel at higher market rates poses a significant challenge to the state. He emphasized that the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Fisheries, Agriculture and Ocean Resources, and MIFCO are coordinating closely to maintain an uninterrupted supply, even as they struggle to meet total demand during this period of instability.
According to the Ministry of Fisheries, the intervention has already seen over 1.1 million litres of fuel distributed to the sector. The government expects these measures to provide immediate financial relief to vessel owners and stabilize the industry during the ongoing global crisis.
