Government to Host Addu City Business Forum to Drive Regional Economic Hub

Politics ·
The Maldives government will host a specialized forum for business owners in Addu City on May 13 and 14, as part of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s strategic pledge to transform the southern city into a primary business hub. Minister of Economic Development, Transport and Trade Mohamed Saeed announced the initiative during a press conference at the President’s Office. The forum aims to connect the government with key stakeholders across the tourism, construction, and trade sectors to outline available incentives and growth opportunities. Central to the government's vision is the introduction of specific concessions for businesses operating in Addu City from 2027 to 2029. These measures are designed to lower barriers to entry and encourage sustainable growth within the regional business sector. To ensure a comprehensive approach, the forum will feature representatives from several key government bodies, including the Ministry of Finance and Public Enterprises, the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation, and the Ministry of Fisheries, Agriculture and Ocean Resources. The Ministry of Homeland Security, Labour and Technology will also participate to address regulatory and workforce requirements. Parallel to the forum, the government is preparing to launch "Free Zone" activities at the Hithadoo business harbour. Managed as a pilot project by Maldives Ports Limited (MPL), the Free Zone is expected to streamline logistics and trade operations, making Addu more attractive to international and local investors. This initiative aligns with President Muizzu's broader economic agenda to establish designated investment zones across the archipelago. By providing targeted incentives for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), the administration aims to decentralize economic activity and foster job creation outside the greater Malé region.
