Government to Transform Guraidhoo Special Needs Centre Into Modern Care Facility
World ·
The Maldivian Cabinet has approved a comprehensive plan to upgrade the special needs centre in Guraidhoo, Kaafu Atoll, transforming the aging site into a state-of-the-art facility. The project aims to replace infrastructure that is over 50 years old with modern facilities designed to provide comprehensive care and support services.
Central to the upgrade is the construction of a new accommodation block. Since taking over the facility, the government has focused on addressing critical resource shortages, prioritizing the immediate improvement of bedding and dietary arrangements for residents to ensure basic dignity and comfort.
Beyond infrastructure, the government is shifting its operational focus toward long-term reintegration. The current policy emphasizes preparing individuals and their families for a successful transition back into the community. By providing essential information and psychological support, the centre aims to ensure that residents do not face isolation upon leaving the facility.
Integration efforts also include a strong focus on economic independence. The centre is actively assisting individuals who wish to enter the workforce after completing their treatment, providing the tools and opportunities necessary to establish independent and dignified lives. This approach is designed to change societal perceptions, encouraging families to view recovered individuals as capable adults rather than burdens.
These systemic improvements follow a track record of success at the facility. Speaking in the Majlis (the Maldivian Parliament) last June, Minister of Health and Family and Welfare Gaala Ali reported that 60 residents have already successfully completed their treatment and been reintegrated into society.
The government intends to carry out these extensive upgrades through collaboration with relevant stakeholders to ensure the facility meets modern healthcare and social service standards.
