Government Weighs Special Subsidy for Maldivian Students in Singapore as Malaysia Loans Come Under Review

Education ·
The government has said it is considering providing a special subsidy to Maldivian students studying in Singapore, while it is also considering closing the schools in Malaysia. The ministry stated that no subsidy will be given to a student currently studying in Malaysia, even if that student goes to Singapore. The ministry said the Student Loan Scheme, which was introduced in 2015, is not a grant; it is a loan that must be repaid. It noted that the terms "student loan" and "special subsidy" should not be confused. The ministry said there are 10 students studying in Singapore and 67 students studying in Malaysia. Of those studying in Malaysia, only five students are said to be studying in Singapore. The ministry added that the student loan scheme was started in 2015 and that the government is now considering a special subsidy for Singapore while the loans for Malaysia are being reviewed. The ministry said that students who have completed their studies and returned home are not eligible for the special subsidy. It stated that 40 such students will not receive the subsidy. The ministry further said that the decision is not meant to create difficulties for students; it is meant to ensure that the scheme is used according to its conditions. The ministry said that if a student who is studying under the loan scheme completes the degree within the period, the subsidy arrangements will be considered, but loans must be repaid after completion. The ministry said that the government has not decided to give special subsidy to all students studying abroad; it will be given only to students who fulfill the criteria set for Singapore. The ministry concluded by saying that the matter will be discussed with the relevant institutions and any final decision will be made after the review is completed.
