Government's App-Based Taxi Fleet Arrives Ahead of April Launch
Politics ·
The first shipment of vehicles for the government's new taxi service has arrived in the Maldives, marking a major step towards its planned April launch.
The initial delivery consists of 60 cars, with a second shipment of 90 vehicles expected on March 29. The 'government taxi line,' operated by the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), is scheduled to begin service on April 2. The service will be entirely app-based, requiring users to book rides through a dedicated mobile application.
Transport Minister Mohamed Ameen confirmed to PSM News that efforts are on track to launch by the scheduled date, with the second batch of cars due within the week. MTCC Managing Director Ahmed Saudi stated that driver recruitment and training are currently underway, and the booking system and application are being finalized. The service will operate 24 hours a day.
MTCC says the primary goal of the state-run taxi line is to improve public access to reliable transportation and enhance overall service quality in the sector. All 150 vehicles in the fleet will be fully electric, supplied by Changan Automobile, and will come in three different sizes to cater to various passenger needs.
The government anticipates that the introduction of this standardized, environmentally friendly service will bring significant positive changes to the taxi industry in the Greater Malé region.
