Government's goal is to grow the Maldives' food needs locally and bring it to market: President Muizzu
Economy ·
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu said today that expanding the agricultural sector, growing the food the Maldives needs within the country and bringing it to market is a goal of the government.
In a post on X marking Farmers' Day, the President said the occasion is a valuable one that reminds us of the important role played by hard-working Maldivian farmers in ensuring food security at the national level and in transforming the economy.
According to the President, reducing dependence on imports and using environmentally friendly methods to grow different kinds of agricultural produce on our own land is linked to national independence.
He said it is important to increase the amount of food produced in the Maldives to protect the country from fluctuations in food prices in the world market and from obstacles that arise in transportation.
Pointing out that the expansion of the agricultural sector would conserve foreign currency in the country and create job opportunities in the islands, the President said the government's goal is to open a path for growing the required varieties in the quantities needed by the Maldives and bringing them to market without importing them.
The President said that in that field, the aim of this government is to carry forward without interruption the important work of charting a way to progress so that farmers' profits would increase with the help of modern technology.
