Gov't Shields Health, Housing from Economic Review, Minister Says
Politics ·
Finance Minister Moosa Zameer has stated that the government will prioritize healthcare and housing, ensuring these sectors remain unaffected by any potential spending adjustments in response to global economic pressures.
Speaking at a press conference, Minister Zameer confirmed he is seeking the President's guidance on fiscal policy changes. He emphasized that medical treatment programs and ongoing housing projects will continue without interruption, citing clear presidential directives.
"Health services cannot be compromised," the Minister said.
While some non-essential projects may be delayed due to the ongoing regional conflict, the government plans to manage cash flow by rescheduling rather than halting vital developments. Projects worth approximately USD 259.4 million, largely financed through contractor arrangements, are set to proceed as planned.
Addressing supply chain concerns, Zameer noted that the State Trading Organization (STO) and private sector partners are working to ensure a steady flow of essential construction materials into the country.
Joint estimates from the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA), the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA), and the Ministry of Finance warn that the nation could face monthly economic losses of USD 5.5 to 6.2 million if the conflict persists.
Although formal austerity measures have not been announced, the government has pledged to safeguard essential public services to maintain stability for citizens during this period of economic uncertainty.
