Grade One Textbooks to Lead Transformative Overhaul of Maldivian School Curriculum

The Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Skills Development has announced that Grade 1 textbooks will be the first to undergo a comprehensive revision as part of a new national curriculum starting this academic year. Speaking at the eighth International Teacher’s Conference, Minister Dr. Ismail Shafeeu explained that the amendments to Key Stage 1—which covers grades one through three—are designed to elevate student achievement goals across the country. The initiative marks the beginning of a broader effort to modernize how foundational concepts are taught to young learners. State Minister for Education Dr. Abdul Latheef Mohamed provided further technical details, noting that the new textbooks will prioritize a thematic integration of learning objectives. Rather than treating subjects as isolated silos, the revised materials will connect different subjects to one another. This interdisciplinary approach aims to make complex concepts more intuitive for students and streamline the delivery of lessons for teachers. To ensure international standards, the Ministry is collaborating with Cambridge University Press & Assessment for technical advice and support. Dr. Latheef emphasized that this project is a cornerstone of the government's strategy to bring transformative changes to the education system, with significant curriculum shifts expected once the textbook revisions are complete. While Grade 1 students will be the first to receive the updated materials, the Ministry has outlined a phased rollout. Textbooks for Grade 2 and Grade 3 students within Key Stage 1 are scheduled for revision in 2028, after which the changes will be extended to higher key stages. To support this transition, the State Minister confirmed that specialized training programs for teachers are scheduled to begin this year. These sessions will equip educators with the pedagogical tools necessary to implement the thematic teaching style and ensure the new curriculum translates into improved classroom outcomes.
