Guesthouse Sector Captures 25% of Total Maldives Tourism Market This Year

The Maldives' guesthouse sector continues to witness steady growth, with over 200,000 tourists opting for community-based stays so far this year. This trend highlights a shifting preference toward authentic local experiences alongside the country's traditional luxury resort model.
Latest statistics from the Ministry of Tourism reveal that 202,815 visitors chose guesthouses between January and May 6, 2026. This figure accounts for approximately 25 per cent of all tourist arrivals during this period, underscoring the increasing economic importance of the guesthouse industry to local island communities.
Overall tourist arrivals have surpassed the 800,000 mark, with a total of 831,254 visitors recorded as of early May. The vast majority of these travelers—817,446 people, or 97.1 per cent—arrived by air, while cruise tourism contributed an additional 13,808 visitors to the total tally.
Despite the strong numbers, the industry has faced headwinds. The Ministry of Tourism noted a temporary decline in arrivals attributed to ongoing conflicts in the Middle East. However, official statements indicate that visitor numbers are now gradually recovering, with a single-day high of 6,611 arrivals recorded on May 1.
The rise in guesthouse stays suggests a diversification of the Maldivian tourism product, making the archipelago accessible to a wider demographic of travelers. By distributing tourism revenue directly into inhabited islands, this growth supports local entrepreneurship and provides a sustainable alternative to the segregated resort experience.
