Hajj Corporation Begins Biometric Collection to Fast-Track Pilgrims via Makkah Route

The Hajj Corporation has launched the collection of biometric data for Maldivian pilgrims, a key requirement for the Makkah Route Initiative designed to eliminate grueling airport queues and streamline the journey to the holy cities.
This digital process captures fingerprints and facial features using smartphones, which are then uploaded directly to the Saudi immigration portal. By pre-clearing pilgrims before they depart the Maldives, the initiative allows travelers to bypass traditional immigration and customs bottlenecks upon arrival in Saudi Arabia.
Collection is currently underway for residents of the capital, Male’, while dedicated sessions for pilgrims from the atolls will be scheduled closer to their respective departure dates. This system integrates directly with Saudi immigration authorities and the Nusuk platform, ensuring a seamless transition from flight to destination.
Launched by Saudi Arabia in 2019 and introduced to the Maldives last year, the Makkah Route represents a modernization of Hajj logistics. Under this arrangement, all visa and customs formalities are completed in the country of origin. Consequently, pilgrims are expected to spend as little as three minutes at the airport after disembarking before proceeding to their destinations.
Hajj Corporation Managing Director Mohamed Shakeel described the service as a transformative shift in the pilgrimage experience. He noted that while the Maldives had previously heard of the initiative, the practical application has revealed just how convenient the system is for citizens.
The Maldives remains one of only ten countries globally selected by the Saudi government to utilize this exclusive service, highlighting a strategic partnership aimed at easing the spiritual journey for thousands of Muslims.
