Hamdhoon Sentenced to Death for 2018 Murder of Ibrahim Agil

Opinion ·
The Criminal Court has handed down the death penalty to Hamdhoon Hamzath for the 2018 murder of 19-year-old Ibrahim Agil from GDh. Faresmaathoda. The verdict came after Agil's parents requested qisas, or retributive justice, in the case. Agil was fatally stabbed on August 31, 2018, at a jetty near the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) headquarters in Malé, shortly after disembarking from a speedboat. He succumbed to his injuries later that evening at ADK Hospital. Three individuals were initially charged in the case, but Hamdhoon was the only one found guilty, while the others, Ali Mijvad Malik Ibrahim and Ibrahim Visham, were acquitted. Witnesses and CCTV footage placed Hamdhoon at the scene, with one witness testifying to seeing him chase Agil while holding a knife. Police indicated that the murder was part of a cycle of retaliation between rival gangs.
