Handing Over Rasmalé to Foreign Entity Is a Dangerous Policy: Former MP Ameeth
Politics ·
Former Maduvvari constituency MP Mohamed Ameeth has described the transfer of 500 hectares of Rasmalé land to Eagle Hills for 99 years as not merely an investment transaction, but a highly dangerous policy for the nation. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Ameeth highlighted that the Maldives possesses unique characteristics protected by the Constitution, including the stipulation that only Muslims can be Maldivian citizens and that no other religion may be practiced in the country. He noted that the country has been a unified nation speaking one language and hearing the call to prayer for 900 years, blessings not shared by other nations. Ameeth warned that leasing land for 99 years solely based on investment returns, without regard for these special qualities, is a very dangerous policy. He cautioned that the outcome could be the loss of peace and unity in the country, potentially leading to long-lasting discord. Ameeth also stated that a nation cannot be developed contrary to the sentiments of its people.
