Haze Blankets Malé, Orange Alert Issued as Air Quality Deteriorates

Environment ·
Malé, the capital of the Maldives, is currently grappling with a significant deterioration in air quality due to haze, prompting authorities to issue an Orange Alert. The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has urged residents to take necessary precautions to safeguard their health. The haze, which has enveloped the city and surrounding regions, is primarily attributed to air pollution exacerbated by weather conditions. According to the HPA, the air quality index (AQI) in Malé has reached hazardous levels, with particulate matter (PM2.5) concentrations significantly exceeding safe thresholds. The Met Office has also reported that hazy conditions are prevalent across northern and central regions of the Maldives. Residents, particularly vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory conditions, have been advised to limit outdoor activities and wear protective masks. The HPA has further recommended keeping doors and windows closed and using air purifiers to minimize exposure to poor air quality. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and have assured the public that further updates will be provided as conditions evolve.
